The article explores modern approaches to developing lexical competence in students learning Russian as a foreign language (RFL). Lexical competence is viewed as an essential part of communicative competence, ensuring learners’ ability to use language effectively in real-life communication. The paper discusses the psycholinguistic mechanisms of vocabulary acquisition, principles of lexical selection and contextualization, and methods for activating vocabulary in speech. Special attention is paid to cognitive, communicative, and cultural approaches that make vocabulary learning meaningful and sustainable. The author provides examples from teaching practice and emphasizes the role of emotional engagement in mastering Russian vocabulary.
