Аннотация

This paper explores how William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice stages complex moral and legal dilemmas through the tools of comic genre. The notions of comic justice and moral irony are not only dramatized through character conflicts, but also challenge the audience and readers to engage in critical moral judgment. The analysis focuses on the tension between Shylock’s lawful claims and Portia’s seemingly “just” resolution, revealing how courtroom scenes conceal deep ethical and ideological contradictions beneath the structure of comedy. The study draws on Hu’s (2021) theory of irony, Moore’s (2023) character-centered approach, and Willson’s (2014) interpretation of justice in Shakespeare’s plays. It also briefly examines how Jamol Kamol’s Uzbek translation reconfigures the play’s ironic and cultural elements for a local readership.
