Abstract

The game of Chovgan represents an integral part of Azerbaijan’s ancient cultural heritage, distinguished by its rich socio-cultural and athletic dimensions. As a traditional equestrian team sport, Chovgan originated in the medieval period, serving initially as a training ground for cavalry and martial skills, before evolving into a widely practiced and celebrated folk game. This article explores the historical roots of Chovgan, drawing on ethnographic and archaeological sources, and examines its classical and contemporary forms, rules, equipment, and the profile of its participants. Particular emphasis is placed on the symbolic significance of Chovgan in Azerbaijani culture, where it functions as a means of expressing national identity. The article also highlights the importance of its recognition by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage and evaluates current efforts aimed at revitalizing, promoting, and internationalizing this traditional game. Chovgan is presented not merely as a relic of the past, but as a dynamic element of contemporary cultural policy and cultural diplomacy. This study ultimately argues that Chovgan is both a sport and a living cultural legacy.
