The article investigates the evolution of the theory of the dictionary entry structure (DES) within foreign and domestic lexicography. It outlines four principal approaches – practical, theoretical, parametric, and textual – demonstrating their relevance to lexicographic description. Particular focus is given to the contributions of A.S. Glebovsky, L.P. Stupin, P.N. Denisov, N.Yu. Shvedova, and Y.D. Apresyan, who expanded the understanding of micro- and macrostructural levels of dictionaries. The paper also analyzes differences between descriptive and normative dictionaries and highlights the growing significance of electronic lexicography. It concludes that, although no single approach provides a complete model of DES, their integration offers a comprehensive framework for further research and practical application in modern lexicography.
