Abstract

Article addresses the important issue of the origin and functioning of euphemisms in the context of linguistic taboo in contemporary Tajik and English languages. The author analyzes the historical and cultural prerequisites for the emergence of taboos as prohibitions on the use of certain words and phenomena, which leads to the formation of euphemisms—substitutes for forbidden words. Various types of euphemisms arising from taboos are discussed, including names of mythical creatures, venomous insects, predatory animals, and diseases.
The study emphasizes the interconnection between taboos and euphemisms, as well as their universality across different linguistic and cultural contexts. It is noted that despite societal changes and a decline in the influence of taboos, euphemisms continue to play an important role in the lexical systems of languages and reflect the cultural and psychological characteristics of their speakers. The research confirms that euphemization is a universal strategy for softening verbal prohibitions, manifested in various languages
