TYPOLOGY AND TRANSMISSION OF UZBEK AND TURKISH RIDDLES

Uzbek and Turkish peoples are two brother nations with similar languages,
literatures and worldviews. These common aspects are also reflected in the riddles of the two
peoples. In riddles, which are considered the oldest type of folk literature, it is possible to see the
common culture of brother peoples as well as the unique characteristics of each nation. For this
reason, in this article, we have divided Uzbek and Turkish riddles into several groups according
to their form and content. The first group includes riddles that are exactly the same as each other,
such riddles are considered the common heritage of the Turkish people. The second group includes
riddles that are very similar to each other in terms of content and scope. These riddles have
similarities as well as differences. The national identity of the riddles was revealed by analyzing
them through examples. The riddles in the third group are riddles that do not repeat each other
and emerged as a result of various geographical, political and social influences. Another group
includes riddles related to numbers. The article specifies the translations and alternatives of the
proverbs belonging to the above groups, and explains their importance in language teaching. This
article examines the role of riddles in teaching Turkish, especially in higher education institutions
in Uzbekistan.
