The article studies the process of terminological substitution in the
lexicon of the Uzbek language in the period 1990–2024. In the context of socio-political
and cultural changes after independence, the institutional lexicon of the Soviet era
(collective farm, state farm, pioneer, Komsomol, district committee, police, etc.) is rapidly
becoming obsolete, and new Uzbek and Uzbek neologisms (farm, Youth Union, police,
governor, academic lyceum, cluster, etc.) are considered. The article theoretically defines
terminological substitution, determines its place in lexicology and lexicography, and
distinguishes the following three main models:
1. formal-substitutional;
2. moral-substitutional;
3. functional-substitutional models.
At the same time, practical manifestations of exchange are analyzed on the example
of education, agriculture, public administration, youth policy, educational-ideological and
household-cultural spheres. Such transitional cases as parallel use, stylistic stratification,
spiritual specialization and metaphorical reactivation are shown. As a result of the
research, it is proved that terminological substitution is not only the passivation of obsolete
units, but also the systematic restructuring of the language vocabulary, the formation of
new conceptual fields and the acquisition of new functional load of old names in artistichistorical
styles.
