This article analyzes the concept of connotation and its role in linguistics from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Alongside the lexical (denotative) meaning of a word, the additional layers of meaning — connotative aspects such as emotional, evaluative, stylistic, symbolic, and cultural dimensions — are examined. The study provides a comparative analysis of the views of local and foreign scholars and illustrates various manifestations of connotation through literary examples from Uzbek literature. As a result, it is scientifically substantiated that connotation expands the semantic potential of words and serves as an important linguistic phenomenon revealing the interrelation between language and culture. In addition, the interconnection and distinctions between connotative units and connotation are discussed, and the evolutionary development and types of connotative units are demonstrated with relevant examples
