Abstract

This article traces the historical and methodological development of combinatorial linguistics in Uzbek, from its earliest manifestations in classical literature to contemporary research. It highlights the contributions of pre-Soviet scholars such as Mahmud Kashgari, Alisher Navoi, and Zahiriddin Muhammad Babur, who laid the intellectual groundwork for understanding word combinability, semantic expansion, and contextual coherence. The research further examines the Soviet period, where scholars including Fitrat, Sh. Rahmatullaev, M. Asqarova, A. G‘ulomov, and Sh. Usmonova formalized combinatorial principles through analyses of valency, syntagmatic relations, and semantic compatibility. During the independence era, cognitive, pragmatic, and discourse-analytic approaches expanded the study of word combinations, complemented by corpus-based and computational methods in the 21st century. Contemporary researchers such as I. Qo‘chqortoyev and D. Madrahimov integrate statistical, cognitive, and experimental methodologies, advancing combinatorial linguistics as a multidisciplinary field. The work demonstrates the gradual evolution of the discipline, emphasizing the interplay between national linguistic data and international theoretical frameworks, and its relevance for lexicography, language teaching, and natural language processing
