Abstract

A speech act is a phenomenon closely connected with the speech situation and plays an important role in revealing the characters’ traits and personalities. Along with the speech situation, factors such as communicative intention and the social status of the communicators are also crucial in the emergence of speech acts. Speech acts are diverse in type and are mainly expressed implicitly. This very feature makes them similar to irony. In methods of expressing ironic meaning, the speaker’s intention is not stated openly but is conveyed indirectly. Irony is the use of words in a sense opposite to their literal meaning, often to express sarcasm, mockery, or ridicule. This article discusses the types of irony expressed through speech acts and the ways ironic meanings are conveyed. These phenomena are analyzed through excerpts from Erkin A’zam’s short story “The uncle of Fayzi”.
