Abstract

This paper reports on the results of a part of a small-scale qualitative study, which aims at identifying the impact of emotions on learning Uzbek as a second language. Although investigating the role of emotions in second language acquisition has been long and proliferative, there have been revealed some gaps in the related research. These gaps include the lack of attention to non-western contexts and languages as well as overlooking the emotional experiences in informal language learning settings. Focusing on positive emotional experiences of learning Uzbek as a second language by Uzbek citizens of non-Uzbek ethnic origin, this paper suggests that the feeling of gratitude is shaped by environments/institutions, personal traits (agency) and good outcomes (language proficiency and well-being). Additionally, gratitude fosters persistence of efforts and gives motivation.
