Abstract

This article analyzes the formation of new meanings of ichthionyms on the basis of linguistic and extralinguistic factors. Among extralinguistic factors, naming methods based on external appearance, color, shape, characteristic, state, and functionality are examined. In particular, new meanings of fish names created through metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, and functional analogy are explained with examples. Linguistic factors are interpreted through ellipsis and semantic calque methods and evaluated in terms of their effectiveness in expressing new meanings. The results of the study show that new meanings in ichthionyms are mainly formed through metaphor, but other methods also play an important role in enriching the vocabulary.
