Abstract

This article explores the sociopragmatic functions of antonyms in English and
Uzbek. It discusses how antonyms reflect social status, cultural values, power, and politeness
norms, highlighting the relationship between language and society. Examples demonstrate crosscultural
differences embedded in antonym usage.
