Abstract

This thesis sheds light on the theoretical foundations of the concept of
pragmasemantics and analyzes its role in linguistics. Based on Shakhriyor Safarov’s views
on semantics and pragmatics, the harmony of meaning and application of language units
is revealed. The main attention is paid to riddles, which are an important genre of folk oral
literature, and how hidden and indirect meaning is formed in them is analyzed from a
pragmaticsemantic perspective. The role of context, thinking, and national-cultural factors
in understanding the content of riddles is also substantiated
