Abstract

This article analyzes the “Sar sila” ritual, which is characteristic of
the Uzbek and Tajik populations living in the Chust district of Namangan region, based on
ethnographic and symbolic approaches. The symbolic meanings of the main components
of the ritual– the father’s farewell to the bride, the recitation of the Qur’an, the offering of
a white blessing (oq fotiha), the placing of a ring on the bride by the groom’s sister, the
performance of the “yor-yor” song, and the custom of throwing a white scarf–are
thoroughly examined. Drawing on the theoretical views of scholars who have studied
Uzbek folk rituals and symbolism, the article highlights the social, religious, and
educational significance of the “Sar sila” ritual.
