Abstract

This article studies the linguistic features of the Karakul dialect, which
occupies a unique place in Uzbek dialectology, but which has been interpreted differently in
various classifications to this day. It is known that the speech of the population of the Karakul
district, located in the southwest of the Bukhara oasis, is often considered in the classification of
Uzbek dialects as a complex territorial unit, influenced by the Karluk-Chigil-Uyghur (urban
dialects) or Kipchak dialects, but at the same time retaining strong elements of the Oghuz dialect.
The study provides a comparative analysis of the classifications proposed by prominent linguists
(E.D. Palivanov, K.K. Yudakhin, V.V. Reshetov, G.O. Yunus, S.Ibragimov, I.Shamsiddinov,
M.Mirzaev, etc.) and clarifies the place of the Karakul dialect in these systems. The article
discusses the phonetic (vowel synharmonism, elongation, phenomena of “j” and “ǯj” fusion),
lexical and morphological (use of kelshik affixes, verb forms) features of the dialect in connection
with historical and ethnic processes in the area. The results obtained show that the Karakul dialect
does not belong to a single dialect in its pure form, but has become a complex area where the
dialects of the Kaluk, Oghuz and Tajik-speaking population intersect, embodying the mutual
integration of Uzbek dialects.
