Abstract

This article analyzes the historical-semantic changes of the timerelated
lexeme “bugun” (today) in the Uzbek language. The article provides an
explanation of the meanings of this word in ancient Turkic sources and its modern
meanings through a comparative approach. In particular, based on the data from Mahmud
Kashgari’s work “Dīwān Lughāt al-Turk”, the initial meanings of this lexeme are
identified, and the processes of its semantic shift in subsequent periods are illuminated.
The results show that the word “bugun” was originally formed as “bu kun” (this day) and
has preserved the meaning of “the current day” up to the present. The article semantically
analyzes the factors behind these changes and substantiates them with comparative
examples from Turkic languages and historical-lexical sources
