Abstract

This article examines the destruction of cultural heritage sites in Europe during the First and Second World Wars and the subsequent post-war restoration practices. The author analyzes various preservation strategies employed for monuments in France (Reims Cathedral), Belgium (Ypres), England (Coventry Cathedral), Poland (Warsaw), Germany (Dresden), and other regions. The paper contrasts methods of restoration and complete reconstruction with concepts of preserving ruins as war memorials. Furthermore, it highlights the approaches of scientific restoration schools and the significance of returning historical ensembles to their original appearance based on archival materials
