This article provides a source-oriented and historicallexicographic analysis of the use of “Boburnoma” in the two-volume “Comparative Dictionary of Turkic–Tatar Dialects” compiled by Lazar Budagov, a prominent figure in the history of nineteenth-century Turkology. The study highlights the significance of “Boburnoma” as an important written source reflecting the real linguistic usage of the Chagatai language in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and examines how the lexical units recorded in the work are represented in Budagov’s dictionary. Based on the material drawn from “Boburnoma”, the article demonstrates the role of contextual examples in ensuring the semantic precision of the dictionary entries, as well as in determining their historical scope of usage and etymological layers. In addition, the source-study value of the examples cited from “Boburnoma” is substantiated with regard to elucidating the historical development of Old Uzbek (Chagatai) vocabulary and to identifying the functional and socio-political meanings of lexical units. The findings confirm that Budagov’s dictionary is a scholarly work compiled on the basis of historical written sources and further clarify the status of “Boburnoma” as a reliable linguistic source for the study of the Chagatai language
