Abstract

In the article, the central concept of translation theory, the scientific interpretation of the theory of equivalence, is analyzed in depth. Based on the views of Vilen Komissarov, the linguistic, semantic, stylistic, and pragmatic layers of equivalence are elucidated. The study provides a scholarly justification for the idea that achieving absolute correspondence in the translation process is impossible; however, preserving semantic proximity, functional correspondence, and aesthetic impact constitutes the translator’s primary task. The text demonstrates that equivalence is a multifaceted phenomenon that extends beyond formal word-level correspondence and is closely linked to cultural context, communicative purpose, and the effect on the reader. Furthermore, adequacy is explained as a process-oriented category, whereas equivalence is interpreted as a result-oriented one; their interrelationship and role in translation practice are also substantiated from an academic perspective
