Article examines the problem of classification of Turkic ethnic proper
names. In the process of studying the characteristics of Turkic ethnic names, four groups were
identified: self-names foreign names, ethnonyms that arose on a territorial basis and contain
geographical terms or names of cardinal directions, political ethnonyms are “artificial” names
of certain ethnic groups that arise due to the ideological principles of a particular social
institution.
