Abstract

This article analyzes the territorial distribution of Kungrat dialects in
the Uzun district area of Surkhandarya region. The study explains the spread of the dialect
through geographical position, ethnic composition, local clan structure, historical
migration, economic life, and language contact. The Kungrat dialect area is conditionally
divided into two groups: relatively stable Kungrat dialects preserving Kipchak phonetic
features and mixed Kungrat dialects influenced by Karluk dialects and Tajik. It is argued
that the dialectal features of Uzun Kungrat speech should be examined not only as isolated
phonetic facts, but also as areal signs connected with local settlements, clan branches and
speech contacts.
