This article analyzes the system of transcription signs used in Uzbek
dialectology. It examines the emergence of transcription in the process of studying Uzbek dialects,
the role of Latin- and Cyrillic-based transcription traditions, and the scientific contribution of J.
Budenz, H. Vámbéry, Y. D. Polivanov, Gʻozi Olim Yunusov, V. V. Reshetov, F. Abdullayev, M.
Saparov and S. Ashirboyev. The article shows that transcription is not a mechanical replacement
of one writing system with another, but a special scientific method for recording dialectal
pronunciation, phonetic variants and sound changes. The comparative analysis of different
systems demonstrates the need to harmonize the national transcription tradition with modern
Latin-based and international Turkological transcription practices
