Abstract

Hundreds of works have been written about Y.D. Polivanov to date. His
contribution to Russian and world Turkology has been thoroughly analyzed. The scholar wrote
about thirty works on issues such as the Uzbek language, Uzbek dialects, the dialects that should
serve as the basis for the Uzbek literary language, the Uzbek alphabet, and orthography. These
works have mostly been positively evaluated. For this reason, he is recognized as one of the
founders of Uzbek linguistics and Uzbek dialectology.
According to our observations, in a number of works on the Uzbek language created in the
1920s and the first half of the 1930s, Y.D. Polivanov attempted to develop a Marxist concept of
language. More precisely, he promoted views aimed at the future merging of national languages.
