Аннотация

Human history has been shaped by spatial limitations. To more easily meet their needs and to live in harmony, trust, and peace, humankind preferred to live in groups, thus giving rise to the phenomenon of urbanization. Just as the characteristics people possess form their personalities, the unique features of cities construct their identity. Urban identity is the sum of natural, artificial, and socio-cultural elements that first come to mind when a city's name is mentioned, and that symbolize that city.
Following the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution, transportation and communication developed rapidly, and in the subsequent period, the world began to become a global village. With modern life, people have been forced to live monotonous lives in enclosed spaces in cities such as workplaces, schools, hospitals, shopping and entertainment centers, and gyms. Individualism, the disappearance of cultural unity, and the decrease in social solidarity have resulted in a type of urban dweller alienated from themselves, the identity of the city they live in, and the values of their society. Today, the concept of urban identity is at risk because modernization is also homogenizing cities.
Zahiruddin Muhammad Babur (1483-1530) was a multifaceted statesman and intellectual who laid the foundations of Turkish rule in India, which lasted for more than three centuries. His work, Baburnama (also known as Vekвyi, Vвkıât-ı Bвbьrо, Vвkıanвme, Vekвyi’name-i Pвdişâhо, Bвbьriyye, Tьzьk-i Bвbьrо), is a rich source for our cultural and artistic history, containing information on various fields such as agriculture, botany, zoology, astronomy, urban planning, architecture, geography, medicine, literature, folklore, and gastronomy. This study, using an interdisciplinary approach, examines the information given in Zahiruddin Muhammad Babur's memoirs about the two ancient cities of Bukhara and Samarkand within the framework of the concept of urban identity.
