Abstract

This article provides information on speech act theory and its origins, types of speech acts, the classification of speech acts (based on J.Ostin’s classification), irony, its types, ironic content and methods of expressing ironic content. The role of speech acts in revealing ironic content is discussed. Irony expressed through speech acts in J.Ostin’s classification and its types are analyzed, with the analyses enriched by excerpts from Erkin A’zam’s short stories.
