Abstract

Fatih Sultan Mehmed Khan, the most eminent sultan of the Ottoman Empire, and Zahiruddin Muhammad Babur Shah, the founder of the Mughal dynasty, altered the course of history and reshaped international balances of power. Both rulers stand at the pinnacle of Turkish, Islamic, and world history. There are numerous parallels between Fatih Sultan Mehmed Khan—who conquered Constantinople at the age of twenty-one—and Zahiruddin Muhammad Babur Shah, who seized the Indian territories and rapidly established a vast and powerful empire. The two sovereigns shared many distinguishing characteristics: their education; their commitment to knowledge, wisdom, literature, art, history, and technology; their achievements in governance and warfare; their personal talents and virtues; their political acumen; and their military courage. Particularly noteworthy is their closeness to scholars and Sufi masters, their reverence for learned and spiritual authorities, and their association with the spiritual guidance and patronage of Khwāja ‘Ubaydullāh Ahrār, one of the foremost Sufi figures of their age, whose influence is regarded as significant in their historic victories. The enduring vitality and success of both the Ottoman and Mughal empires across vast geographies were profoundly shaped by the personalities and distinctive qualities of these two rulers. This paper aims to provide an overview of Fatih and Babur—two of the most significant rulers in world history—and to evaluate their shared and comparable attributes
